Bible Study Information

Hello everyone-

I hope you all had a wonderful celebration of Jesus’ birthday, and I wish you all a Happy new Year!

I am sorry this has taken me so long to get posted. I am praying the crazy months are now behind me 

This is the plan for the Bible/book study. The book is The Busy Homeschool Mom’s Guide to Romance; Nurturing Your Marriage During the Homeschool Years, by Heidi St John. I have order ten books because I received an incredible price on them. They will be $8.00 a piece including shipping, wow huh! Normally, they are $10.00 without shipping. (I ordered ten books, so this will be on a first come first serve basis.)We will be reading through the book together, paring it with the Bible, and we will also have some monthly challenges as well.

I have talked with the chaplain and he has given his blessing for our group to use the Chapel as a meeting place. The plan is to meet once a month (from January until April) on the third Thursday from 1:30-2:30. We may have to bump it back to May if we do not receive our books in time to do a little reading before our January meeting.

The question was brought up about older kids. We are hoping that some of the older kids would pitch in to help watch the younger ones during this hour. We see this as a great opportunity for them to lead and show off their mentoring skills to the littler kids. But, if your children are not interested in helping it is not a requirement. They are more than welcome to come anyway.

As far as younger kids… the plan is to have older ones there to watch them, splitting them into two rooms a toddle/baby room and an elementary room. I do have two older children who will volunteer to babysit. Michaela has taken the babysitting course, and also has a weekly job watching little ones, so I would feel completely comfortable leaving her in the toddler room. Chance is great with elementary age kids, and also is in a mentoring/watching situation (but volunteer) on a weekly basis so I would feel completely comfortable leaving him in that room.

I am hoping that we will have a couple more of the older kids who would also volunteer their time to help Chance and Michaela.

So a quick breakdown

In order to do that, sometimes we need a little time of refreshment. We will meet every other month for two hours, of learning something new, being inspired, and then a little socialization and networking time.

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. III John 4

Heart of the Matter on-line conference

I do not know about you, but I was so disappointed that I missed the KMC homeshool conference. Conferences are a great way to re-inspire you and fill you up when you are drained. The new homeschool year will be upon us before we know it and I know I will need some inspiration. If you need some inspiration too, consider participating in the on-line live homeschool conference offer by Heart of the Matter. Registration begins June 1st for this conference. It will be held August 9th-13th.

I participated in the conference in February and it was excellent. I highly recommend these conferences! They are live and run from approximately 3:00pm until 10:30 pm (out time.) If the timing is not good for you, then there is the option to sign up and two weeks after the event you will receive MP3s of the conference to download.

These are just some of the speakers for this event: Susan Wise Bauer, Lee Binz, Sally Clarkson, and Jeannie Fulbright .

Living With Arms in the Air

I sat behind my daughter and watched as she raised her arms, Zambia heat brushing bare skin as the safari jeep drove along the park's dusty roads.  Earlier we had watched elephants, hippos, zebras, impalas, and more, not to mention the male lions mere feet from our reach.  The day was spent enjoying yet another aspect of Africa, our trip winding to a few days (at least that was the plan before God blessed us with a volcano eruption and delayed flights).

Watching my daughter, I thought, This is it!  This is how I want to spend my life -- riding with my arms thrown up in reckless abandon!  Embracing each moment and each adventure.

Our family spent three weeks with friends who live and work on the campus of African Bible College in Malawi, Africa.  I hardly know where to begin to share all our amazing experiences -- but we're putting together a "workshop" on our adventures so that we can share it with you on Wednesday, May 26th of this month.

I wanted to take a moment to share what I learned during the inspiring and oh-so-encouraging KMC Homeschool Conference this past weekend.  While we were in Africa, we had the privelege of attending a few classes where our friend, Bob, is a professor.  Something he reiterated, (as the students were just returning from a week long Spring Break), is the importance of Finishing Well.  He encouraged his students, especially the seniors, to "push through" and to stay focused as they came to the end of the school year and, as seniors, neared graduation.  As home school parents, we, too, are coming to the end of another school year, pushing through those last few projects, tests, nearing the end of a curriculum.

Rebekah carrying Baby Wonder on her back, just like the native mamas!

The conference began on Friday evening with Debra Bell, author of The Ultimate Guide To Homeschooling, who spoke on the topic of "Home Schooling From A Foundation of Grace."  Her talk touched me so deeply that when I went up afterward to tell her thank you, I burst into tears!  I felt so silly, but there it was, emotion streaming down my cheeks as I tried to explain that her words met me at a sort of summit I've been climbing in the past few months.

Bell's outline:
I. Getting Started in Grace... remembering that life's pressures are not the source of grace, but the means of grace.

II. Continuing in Grace... letting my daily life demonstrate the power of the Gospel; allowing my children to witness my need for God's grace and the power of His grace working in my life.

III. Finishing in Grace... keeping in mind that God knows the future of my children and that I'm called to train them today but that I'm not responsible for their future.  (She shared that her four grown children have the great idea to do homeschool conferences together and talk about "The 10 Things Our Mother Did That You Ought Not To Do."  She lightheartedly, humbly shared how proud she is of her children, but that they've turned out in spite of her parenting and homeschooling methods.)  I don't know about you, but I tend to take waayy too much of the credit -- good or bad -- for my children's successes and failures!

Jordan giving a piggy-back ride...

The next day Kathy Kuhl, author of Homeschooling Your Struggling Learner, spoke a few different times on the aspects of teaching students with learning difficulties.  She reminded us moms to persevere, slow down, leave lots of room for creativity, keep exposing our children to many, many opportunities, and to be a continuous student of our children.

Kuhl was a wealth of information with four pages of resources to help parents.  For instance, one of the ideas she shared was the "3 Stars and a Wish" concept in which the teacher, (or peers), critique writing, naming three things they like and one suggestion for improvement.  I had never heard of it before, but I've already started using it this week with my kiddos.  She reminded us of the importance of being our children's biggest fans, their biggest encouragers.  She encouraged us to keep the big picture in mind -- and to teach our children to see the big picture, too.

Rebekah surrounded by new friends in the village of Dzuwa.

One of Kathy Kuhl's talks was on a subject that is near and dear to my heart: Staying Sane, Keeping On: Balancing Your Priorities.  She reminded us of assumptions to avoid... perfectionism, sheltering or coddling, my child's success = my success (ah! another reminder for me in this area!).  She helped us recognize the importance of teaching certain attitudes... respect, self-awareness, passion for learning, humility, perseverance, and above all to love, serve, enjoy, and trust God.

Kuhl encouraged us moms to pursue a healthy lifestyle for ourselves, making time to get away to reflect and plan, to seek out support (such as healthy friendships), exercise and maintain fitness, pursue our dreams and have a hobby or business.

Seth walking with the children to school in the village.

Kuhl then addressed the need to nurture our marriages.  She put a power point slide up that read, "Home Depot + ice cream - kids = date."  (Tweak that equation to fit your paradigm! smile.)  She inspired us to be spontaneous and intentional about pursuing our spouse!  An idea she shared is to learn to give the "elevator talk" in which you learn to convey the day's important information to your husband when he arrives home much the same way as if you were in an elevator and your boss stepped in and you had five floors to propose an important idea to him.  This was an aha! moment for me as I definitely can learn to be more concise in my conversation -- not only for my husband's sake, either! smile.

Myself, Jordan, and Nathaniel loving babies in an orphanage.

Kuhl finished by talking about the importance of families laughing together.  Ah, yes!

My husband loving babies, too...

The final talk was given by Debra Bell who spoke on "Standing Strong With High Schoolers."  This was another talk that especially encouraged my heart as we've stepped off the high board into the adolescent years.  How is it that I found it incredibly affirming to hear her say, "The teenage years will not be fun.  There will be many fun times.  But in general, don't think that it's supposed to be fun."  Could it be that my ever-optimistic self knows I deal better when dealing with reality? smile.  Bell said, "Your teenager is not thinking How can I make this easy for Mom and Dad?

Yet what a wonderful time as our "babies" transition into men and women with their own ideals, values, beliefs, and God-given passions!  How exciting to be the ones who get to come alongside them in their journey, to be their "disciplers and fellow believers in need of grace!"

Nathaniel doing what he does best... loving on people...

So why did I insert pictures from our trip to Africa in this post?  (Besides the fact that I'm so stinkin proud of my family that I just couldn't help but share them with you all!)  Interestingly, the Homeschool Conference was the perfect way to "finish" a homeschool experience of a lifetime.  I didn't attend with the thought that there would be a connection between our trip and the conference.  And yet, everything I heard at the conference tied in with our experiences in Africa.

...little people in this case.

I suppose that, in many ways, Africa allowed me to watch my children, study them, get to know them on so many different levels -- levels which I've never had the opportunity to see them.  Really, it turned out to be so much more than a family trip.  It was more of an opportunity for six different people to experience the world through six different perspectives.  To experience a foundation of God's grace in a real, tangible way -- each of us met in our own unique place.  To discover a little more about ourselves and our strengths and weaknesses.  To find moments when our breath would catch and we'd suddenly know, I was made for this!  To grow in patience, understanding, and tolerance for one another.  To learn that the cost of one PSP or DSi game pays the rent for someone in Malawi.  To get the priceless gift of a chance to give ourselves away in tangible circumstances.  To act as disciplers along the journey.  To watch our children overcome "learning difficulties" only to thrive in moments when their hearts beat fast and their joy overflowed.

I feel as though we've visited a Summit of Grace.  And to stand atop that mountain is exhilarating.  Humbling.  A throw-your-arms-up-in-the-air-moment, as the rush of His love and profound joy course through.

This homeschool journey... this parenting journey... as you press on, striving to Finish Well... may you, too, throw your arms up and embrace His adventures for you today!

Talent/Gift Day... are you up for the challenge?

I read an article about a homeschool dad of 13 children. He had gone to a convention or class and heard from a dad that was a scientist. This scientist-homeschool-dad would set aside time every week for his children to do science experiments. The dad-of-13 thought, “Wow, my gift is not science. My gifts must pale in comparison.” But the Bible tells us not to compare ourselves to one another! So he looked at his life – What was his family’s natural passion? What did they do “by nature?” He was an English buff, so he began to set time aside to incorporate more English lessons into the family’s everyday activities.

One of our passions is small-scale gardening/farming. We have learned quite a bit about gardening and keeping chickens (which is a WILDLY growing trend in the U.S., even in urban areas!), and I was thinking it might be fun to invite the homeschool group out to learn a little bit about the cycle of permaculture: keeping animals (chickens, in our case), composting, and gardening. I could also explain the SFG (Square Foot Gardening) method, and I would have small pots with soil and seeds so that each child (and mom/dad, if they wanted to!) could choose something to plant and take home with them.

I am a very practical-minded person, so I hope this is not too silly or boring – is doing a…I wouldn’t call it a class, but maybe an “intro?” – on freezer cooking. Some people call it “bulk cooking” or other names. I would have to have some time to get this idea together, as well as appliances (I need a food processor, but we’ve already planned on budgeting for that), but the basic idea is this: you assemble many meals all at one time, freeze them in portions that will best suit your family, and then you use them for a month so that you don’t have to worry about cooking dinner (and possibly lunch) for an entire month. You know what is in the food, you can make it as healthy as you want, and it tastes just as fresh as if you had made it that day.”

S. sent this e-mail to us a couple months back and Sharon and I were automatically excited. Everyone has a talent/gift! Now, I know some of you are skeptics, and are thinking “I do not have a talent.” Hmmmmmm…. I beg to differ. If we all stop, take a breath, and mull it over, like the dad of 13 children, we will find something our family is naturally passionate about. Art, music, farming, gardens, hiking, soccer, sports in general, healthy eating, horseback riding, literature, orators, crafts, cooking... these are just a few ideas right off the top of my head that I personally know some of your families fall into.

We are introducing a new idea to our homeschool group. Use your talent/gift day. These would be classes taught by you on things you love! Now, I know some of you are thinking, “me teach, I cannot teach a class.” Hmmmm…. I beg to differ. Who is more qualified to teach a class about a certain topic than someone who is passionate about that topic?

These classes would also be wonderful ways to get your older children into action. Why not have your son teach a class on football if he loves football, or your daughter teach a class on horseback riding if she loves horseback riding. Be creative!

We have several classes in the works, with tentative dates set:
May- Permaculture class
June- Bulk Cooking (mom’s) class
July- Africa class
August- Organization (mom’s) class
September (ish)- Treasure Island class

Are you excited? Are you willing to take the challenge? Are you willing to use your talent/gift?

homeschooling on a shoestring

I have preached to several people who are just starting out homeschooling with their little ones do not buy a full curriculum. In my humble opinion, I think it is a waste of money. I do think a good phonics program goes a long way. Other than that, all you need is a library and some creative juices. Oh and I relied heavily on the internet. I still do, for worksheets, exploration sites, games, and ideas. So, I wanted to share a few of the internet sites that I have used over the years. Some of them have membership fees or are not free, but if you are going to use them regularly it is worth the fee, to be able to print off worksheets, lesson plans and the like.

Enchanted Learning has tons of printables for Pre-K through 3rd grade. I used them extensively during those years with Chance and Michaela.

Homeschool Math the place to find homeschool math worksheets through the 4th grade. I have used them off and on.

Bigbrainz has a really fun multiplication game... and they have a free trial. We have only used the free trial version and the kids love it.

Garden of Praise I just found this site and will use it extensively next year with the kids. My oh my, what a wealth of great information to use. Check out the artists page, we are going to be using it and the biography pages as well, amongst other things.

Homeschool Share lapbooks, unit studies, and more lapbooks all for free!

CurrClick This site has tons of things to use as well. Lapbooks, unit studies, handwriting pages, journaling pages. It is not a free site, but if you set up an account and then sign up for their news letters you will receive offers free items monthly. I just downloaded 18 free items today :)

Free classic Audiobooks just what it says free classic audiobooks to listen too.

This is just a small sampling of sites I have used or will use. The internet can be a huge resource in your schooling. I literally have thousands of sites in my folders, all organized for next year. When you are searching out things do not forget about popular sites like Discovery Channel for KidsNational Geographic for Kids, and Scholastic (you can use the teacher information found on scholastic.) Also remember that many federal site have kids web pages too like National Agricultural Kids PageNational Parks Service, or The Library of Congress. Also, do not forget about city sights. Look at the great sites I found for The New York Philharmonic and the San Fransisco Symphony.

Be creative and have fun- Lisa

KMC Homeschool Conference 2010

Featured Speakers 2010 for the KMC Spring Homeschool Conference April 3oth- May 1st.

Deb Bell

Debra Bell is the best selling author of the award-winning Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling and the forthcoming Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling Teens. A former high school and college English teacher, Debra and her husband Kermit home educated their own four kids K-12. Three are college graduates, the fourth graduates shortly; one is married and one is in graduate school. The daughter of two public school teachers, Debra holds a B.S. in communications education and a Masters in English. Currently, she is a doctoral candidate in educational psychology at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, where she holds an assistantship in the College of Education. Her research interest is identifying why, how, and when homeschooling works; and she looks forward to using her training to better serve the homeschool community well into the future. Debra was a reluctant convert to homeschooling in the early 80's. While finishing her graduate work for her permanent teaching certification, friends of hers (without degrees or teaching experience) started to homeschool and got better results than she did in the classroom. After recovering from the mind-blowing shock of this, she paddled her boat into their stream and opened up a recruitment office of her own. During her homeschooling years, Debra helped to found and lead three homeschool co-ops which continue today (one for elementary, one for high school, and one for drama), and taught composition and literature courses for more than twenty years. Today she continues to teach Advanced Placement English courses online. Debra and her husband are long time members of Sovereign Grace Ministries which plants churches in the U.S. and abroad. And they are very grateful their four children have made the spread of the gospel through church-planting the central focus of their lives as well. Debra blogs at Reinvention in Progress. Her website is Debra Bell's Homeschool Resource Center.

Carpe Diem!

Passion.  Vision.  Adventure.  Words -- concepts -- I've mulled over and over in my mind, how do these play out specifically in our homeschool group? ever since Lisa and I teamed up together to begin this group anew.  Leadership.  (I write this as my son sits next to me and asks about our vision and direction for the remainder of the school year; We've finished our curriculum...  Ah, yes, leadership...)

I am mindful of the fact that I have my children for a season.  A short season.  That now is the time to invest in, train, and guide them.  It's a daunting responsibility.  One that requires intentionality and purposeful decisions.

It is this reason that I am eager to team up with like-minded families -- to be a group that comes alongside one another to encourage and support one another in our parenting.  To share ideas and perspectives and network to build a community of homeschool families with an abundance of creativity, leadership, passion, vision.  A community which views learning as a lifelong adventure.

I look forward to getting to know you all better.

Grace,

Sharon

starting right now, right here!

City on our Knees
                ~Toby Mac

“If you gotta start somewhere why not here
If you gotta start sometime why not now
If we gotta start somewhere I say here
If we gotta start sometime I say now
Through the fog there is hope in the distance
From cathedrals to third world missions
Love will fall to the earth like a crashing wave

Last year was a big turn over year for our homeschool group. Since then, our group has not been very active, and I became a little frustrated. So much so, I took on an attitude of why try? I am absolutely positive God was beating his head against the wall with frustration over this attitude of mine.

God: Why try? Why not try? Hello down there, are you hearing me?

Me: Where would I start God?

God: How about right where you are!

So here I sit, raging with excitement, thrilled at the unknown, starting here and now!  Why not live your life out loud screaming who you are right here, right now! This song speaks volumes to me as a person, as a mom, as a Christian, as a family who homeschools, as a leader.  There is no better time to be who we are, living the life God gave us, than this very moment. Waiting for a calmer time in my life, or a time when I have it all together is ludicrous. It will never come! Tonight’s the night, seize the day, live for God, lead for God, serve for God now!

Join Me?
